WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF BRAKE FAILURE

A brake failure can happen to anyone who drives a car. In this emergency situation, you certainly must know what to do and what things to avoid to preserve your life.

SIGNS YOUR BRAKES ARE ABOUT TO FAIL

Do not ignore these signs; have your brake system inspected ASAP if your vehicle experiences one or more of them:

  • The brake system warning light on your dashboard
  • Brakes take longer to stop the car
  • Unusual dragging when accelerating
  • Unusual performance of the brake pedal
  • The car pulls toward one side
  • Unusual sounds when braking

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR BRAKES FAIL

In such an emergency situation, the first thing to control is your reaction: Try to remain calm and remember the following steps to stop your vehicle:

  • Check for objects that might be obstructing the pedal
  • Pump your brakes repeatedly to see if they work again
  • If your brakes are antilock (ABS), apply firm and steady pressure to make them work again.
  • Downshift gradually into low gears in manual vehicles to slow down. In automatic vehicles, move from D to 3, 2, 1, no matter if the engine whines. Never use reverse, park, or neutral.
  • Use the emergency (parking) brake ONLY at low speeds. Using it briskly at high speeds is dangerous and can cause your car to spin or skid. Release it if this happens.
  • Move away from the traffic and try safely to pull over. If brake failure happens while on the highway, turn off the cruise control and use a divider or guard rail to scrape the side of the vehicle to slow it down.
  • Never turn off the car as you may block the steer, worsening the situation
  • Use your Warning Lights and honk repeatedly to alert other drivers on the road you are having problems
  • Asses the surroundings for hills, grass, or gravel to slow down; soft objects like bushes or wooden fences to scrape your vehicle and create friction to make it stop.
  • Once your car has stopped, call a tow truck.
