One of the most frequent questions asked by our customers is the reason why our rates increase and delivery timeframes suffer delays during wintertime. The causes are many and quite powerful and they all affect, one way or another, our transportation business, especially in Northern states, where extreme weather can be expected for sure:
Winter storms
Climate change has forced a recrudescence of adverse weather conditions; now it’s common to have more severe blizzards, harsh winds, and heavy snow and truckers must seek shelter until it is safe for them to drive again, increasing expenses.
Icy roads
Meaning less traction; driving a super heavy 18-wheelers truck on icy roads, loaded most of the time with up to 9 vehicles, represents a huge challenge, although our drivers are experienced and skilled enough to do it. However, they have to be extra-cautious and take it slowly, increasing distance between vehicles to minimize risks.
Chain Laws
In some states, the use of chains on truck tires is mandatory when roads are slippery and the speed is restricted to 30-40 miles per hour
Heavy snow
Meaning sleet and fog which reduces visibility and forces truckers to slow down and drive with extra caution.
Flooding
Snow melt causes flooding, forcing to take detours and causing delays, increasing fuel costs.
Road Closures
Car accidents, low visibility, icy roads, etc., may cause the cancellation of some routes with no notice, immobilizing traffic for who knows how long.
Strong winds
A strong gust of wind can make any vehicle destabilize and sometimes to even cause an overturn and rollover.
Fewer sunlight hours
Meaning less visibility and therefore, decreasing speed; furthermore, there are laws prohibiting oversized vehicle transport in the dark, and they are restricted to daylight hours only.
All the above circumstances make it difficult, if not impossible sometimes, to keep a schedule for our truckers; most of the time, they must get off the road and stand down to be safe while waiting for better conditions. Keeping themselves safe as well as the massive machines they drive and the vehicles they are transporting under such difficult conditions requires a lot more effort, awareness, and skills.
The good news is severe weather with such a negative impact during wintertime affects only northern areas; other regions are not hit by such adverse conditions
