Let´s start by saying that tipping is an optional decision, it is entirely up to you. As far as truck drivers are concerned, a tip is something that is left to your own discretion, it is not required, although it is a common practice. After providing a good service in which the customer´s expectations have been met, a tip is some sort of reward for a well-done job. But, ¿what if it´s the other way around and the experience wasn´t satisfactory? Or maybe you think you are already paying enough for the service, or it is your belief that transport drivers earn good money and they don´t need to be tipped. Here are some basic guidelines that will be useful if you have not yet decided whether or not to tip your carrier´s driver.
Truck driver, a tough profession
The role of a haul trucker is sometimes undervalued; they have to deal with a lot of stress on a daily basis; they face many occupational stressors as a consequence of the heavy physical and psychological workload such as erratic schedules, disrupted sleep patterns, extreme and constant time pressures, social and family isolation, disrespectful treatment from others, road and weather hazards, traffic, etc. In addition, they provide a valuable service with their passion, dedication, and personal sacrifice. Having said that, a tip is, certainly, a gesture that is always appreciated.
Earning a tip
Although their obligation is to provide a professional service, whether tipped or not, sometimes they can go above and beyond to provide an excellent service. Here are some examples of an extra effort that deserves to be tipped:
- Professionalism: Shows commitment and responsibility when performing his/her job, following safe driving practices and specific training guidelines.
- Communication: Keeps close contact with the customer, providing timely information on pick-up and drop-off estimated hours as well as any unforeseen circumstances.
- Punctuality: Leaving aside circumstances out of his/her control such as weather or road conditions, honors his/her time and others by meeting schedules and timelines.
- Earlier Delivery: Takes the opportunity, whenever possible, to make early deliveries.
- Friendly and polite treatment: Is friendly, courteous, and respectful to customers, showing a willingness to help and please.
- White glove vehicle handling: Shows respect, experience, and knowledge when handling a vehicle, delivering it in perfect conditions.
- Tries to deliver as close as possible: Has always in mind the customer´s needs and convenience.
- Intact delivery: Makes sure that the vehicle is in perfect condition when delivered.
¿HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU TIP?
It depends on you; any material gratification will be appreciated; however, depending on the complexity of the job, distance, and type of vehicle, the recommended is something between 5% – 20% of the transport cost.
Tipping your driver is a nice way of thanking, appreciating, and supporting hard work well done.
