FLOODED VEHICLES AND WHAT TO DO

If you are one of those unfortunate who have suffered the devastating effects of Hurricane Ian and your car has been exposed to water damage, this article is for you; read it carefully for it might be of great help in these unusual circumstances.  It is vital to be precise about the kind of flood damage your vehicle has suffered, as it will determine whether it can be repaired or not: freshwater overflows (floods, storms, torrential rain, etc.) aren’t as devastating as saltwater, which is highly corrosive, especially to the engine and electrical system, making them almost impossible to restore. Another crucial factor is the degree of flooding; if the flood rose above the floorboard, it is a much more complicated scenario; the time it sat in water is another decisive aspect in determining the extent of damage caused and whether it is repairable or not. But let’s leave these issues to the mechanics and just begin with the things YOU can do:

Do not turn on the engine

Do not start your car under any circumstance as it may cause irreversible damage if there is water in the engine or droplets on the dipstick.

Evaluate the damages

The evidence of water level outside is an indication of what to expect; up to the floorboard, not so bad, it probably can be fixed; past the dashboard, critical damage, little hope. Check for damages to electrical system components (radio, air conditioning, headlights, etc.).  Verify the operation of other items such as mechanical systems and safety features, battery cables, and wiring harnesses.  Take pictures for your insurance claim.

Eliminate all the water and moisture

Open doors and windows to ventilate and remove everything from the interior, seats, upholstery, door panels, and carpets; Prevent the mold and mildew from growing and the musty odor by drying your car as much as possible; use a wet/dry vacuum, towels, fans, deodorizers, and dehumidifiers to speed up the drying process.

Check fluids

Make sure there is no water in your vehicle´s fluids, especially in your oil compartment; if so, have it totally emptied by an experienced mechanic.

Have your car inspected by a professional: A professional diagnosis is vital to know where you stand when it comes to deciding if your car is worth repairing or if it would be better to buy a new one.

Contact your auto Insurance Company

Call your agent to file a claim in accordance with your policy coverage. The insurance adjuster will require photograph documentation of your car´s condition
