There are some bad driving practices that cause dangerous effects you may not be aware of and in which we are 100% sure you have incurred at some point of your driving life, even if you consider yourself a flawless driver. Here are some of them:
ACCORDION EFFECT
When there´s a traffic jam, a considerable reduction in speed takes place when the vehicles restart moving more slowly the further back they are in the line; if the first vehicle reacts in a second, the next one takes two and so on, making the line shrink and stretch like and accordion. The reason for this effect is the drivers´ distraction and slowness to resume moving.
DOMINO EFFECT
And speaking of distraction and lack of attention, this effect is caused in traffic jams by a vehicle that doesn´t brake in time and hits the vehicle in front, which in turn hits the preceding vehicle and so on and on. This effect is the result of speeding, inattention and failure to keep a safe distance.
SCREEN EFFECT
This effect occurs when a lateral wind impacts strongly the vehicle when exiting a tunnel, passing over a bridge or overtaking trucks or buses, pushing it to that side, because they were acting as a screen. This is a consequence of driving at high speeds and ignoring the warning signs of strong wind gusts.
TUNNEL EFFECT
The reduction of the angle of vision at high speeds is known as the tunnel effect, since human vision ceases to perceive signs and objects on the side of the road, seeing only what is just ahead; everything outside this small angle will be practically invisible as if inside a tunnel.
ELEPHANT EFFECT
During hard braking at high speed, a heavy passenger seated in the back with no seat belt will be projected forward with a force similar to a 4-ton elephant.
PEEPING TOM EFFECT
This effect is caused by the curiosity of drivers passing near a road accident, who slow down or stop to look around, slowing traffic and sometimes causing accidents themselves.
UNDERWATER EFFECT
Incorrect use of the seat belt, wearing it loosely under the abdominal band or the use of cushions, can cause the passenger to fall face-first into de dashboard, the steering wheel or the front seat.
REBOUND EFFECT
This is the effect when drowsiness and fatigue suddenly reappear after having tried to combat them by using stimulants like coffee, energetic drinks and tea.
