LET´S HAVE A LIGHT TALK: Car lights language

Lights and horns are some of the drivers´ tools to communicate and interact with other drivers.  There is a whole universal car lights language and road codes that include hand signals and gestures to prevent, warn, inform, get your attention, or thank you, among other expressions.  Understanding and using them is quite important for your safety on the road; here are some meanings of these signals:

  • Burst of high beams flashing repeatedly: Warning of danger ahead: it might be an accident, work crew, objects on the road, or animal crossing.
  • Flashing lights and thumbs up: Informing you of the intention of a lane change
  • Double flashing of bright beams: An expression of gratitude.
  • Flashing high lights twice as passing: A warning that there is a police speed trap on the way.
  • Flashing bright lights: This is an expression of anger in response to some unsafe or disrespectful maneuver.
  • Quickly flashing the headlights: This means it is safe to pass when changing lanes.
  • Light tapping of the brake pedal to flash the brake lights: Meaning you are slowing down or stopping.
  • Flashing hazard lights: This means your intention of stopping abruptly or informing of danger ahead.
  • Headlights and clearance lights on: In poor vision situations such as fog, night, rain, or dusk, make you visible to others.
  • Activating high beams, lowering, and resetting: In a one-way road, ask another driver behind you to turn their high beam down.
  • Truck or bus turn signals on the right side: Informing you it is safe to overtake.
  • Truck or bus turn signals on the left side: This means it is safer to wait.
  • Flashing repeatedly: It is a request or insistence that a leading driver speed up or change lanes to get out of the way of a faster following driver.
  • A single quick flash of headlights: Informing that your headlight is not functioning or reminding you to turn the headlights on.

M&M VEHICLE TRANSPORT RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Whenever someone flashes headlights in your direction, take it as a reminder or a warning signal.
  • Use your headlamps wisely and with caution, not as an aggressive form of driving to intimidate others.
  • Pay special attention to police lights flashing, as it requires you to proceed with caution or to pull you over.
  • Know your driving laws; headlight flashing is considered illegal in some states and you can get a traffic fine or be cited for the act of flashing.
  • Headlight flashing can be ambiguous or have contradictory meanings: Be alert at all times to the surroundings and what is happening around you while driving.
