I SURVIVED A CAR ACCIDENT

Yellow Caution Tape after a car accident

289.5 million Vehicles registered in the USA, an average of three vehicles per household. Six percent of our waking hours spent in a car, an average of 2.24 trips per day. It is just a matter of time for us, drivers, to be involved in a car crash, whether we are a careful or a careless conductor.  Be it a minor accident (just a “kiss”) or a serious crash with fatal victims.

The Insurance Information Institute (III) recommendations are:

  • Check yourself for injuries
  • Check on the well-being of your passengers
  • Get to safety, side of the road or sidewalk. If possible, pull your car to the side of the road with hazard lights turned on and road flares
  • Call Emergency Service
  • Wait for help
  • Exchange Information with the other driver. Get their personal details like their name and contact, insurance company and policy number, driver`s license and plate number, type, color and model of vehicle, and the location of the accident.
  • Do not discuss whose fault it was; the insurance company will determine it.
  • Document the accident. Write down the officer’s name and badge. Ask for a copy of the accident report. Take pictures, write down the names and addresses of all parties involved, including passengers on the other vehicle.
  • Talk to witnesses and take names and contact information
  • Notify your Insurance for the claim process.

What are the effects of a car accident?

PTSD-Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

After a car accident, damages are not only physical or material but also psychological; PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) may appear after such a nerve-wracking experience and affect your whole life. It can affect your job, your sleep, and your relationships, among others. Symptoms like anxiety or depression, apathy, negativity, mood swings, nightmares or insomnia, new fears or phobias, and social isolation can make your routine a living hell. Relaxation technics such as yoga, exercise, and controlled breathing or talking to a friend may help in these cases and, hopefully, this mental distress will go away after a few days, but if they persist, it is advisable to seek therapy.
