DEFINITION OF CAR HORN: A sound-making device used to warn others of the vehicle´s approach or presence, or to call attention to some hazard.

Nothing farther from this noble initial purpose; today’s overpopulated roads and permanently traffic-jammed streets are full of frantic horn-blowers that make the situation more unbearable for other drivers; they blast their horns to express anger and frustration and as a result of this aggressive behavior, road rage incidents have increased, ending up in violence and dead, at the point of forcing some states to pass laws on the use of the horn. 

Most states have this same law: “…If reasonably necessary to ensure safe operation of a motor vehicle, the driver shall give an audible warning with the driver’s horn but shall not otherwise use the horn when on the highway”.

APPROPRIATE USE OF THE CAR HORN

Here are some examples of situations where the use of the horn is accepted:

• When another driver is about to hit you and a car collision is imminent.
• When a pedestrian is unknowingly walking into a dangerous place or is in danger of being hit.
•  To alert a distracted driver of a traffic signal.
• When the driver of the car next to you is getting too close.
• To warn others of any impending dangers or hazardous conditions that may be ahead.

• Try to use your horn responsibly and only when absolutely necessary.
• Be patient and polite when driving; use the horn as a tool for driving to achieve safety. 

• If you really need to use it, don´t lay on the horn, just make a quick beep.
• Using your car horn improperly is illegal in some states with noise pollution laws in residential and rural areas and you may be fined.

• Remember: the horn itself is not the issue. It is those that choose to use it improperly
